I have recently been putting more effort into brushing up on my Mandarin sometimes with success, other times with the help of an interpreter and a growing collection of translation apps. More and more, I have been engaging with Chinese investors, both from the mainland and abroad.
It has been a rewarding challenge on some days my Mandarin flows, and on others I feel like I’m accidentally negotiating for dumplings instead of discussing investments. What I appreciate are those who patiently accommodate my less-than-perfect Mandarin. Their understanding not only makes conversations smoother but also reminds me that sincerity often matters more than fluency.
One thing I have noticed in these interactions is how deeply productive Chinese culture is, where speed is king. Decisions are made quickly, opportunities move fast, and you either keep up or risk being left behind. This mindset is particularly relevant today, as many investors are actively seeking ways to protect and grow their wealth in the face of volatile markets.
In a recent conversation with a Chinese professional who has been based in Kuala Lumpur for a number of years now, I also learned that more Chinese are considering relocation abroad not only in search of business opportunities, but also to provide their families with new environments and broader horizons.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to build on these relationships and engage with more Chinese investors through meaningful partnerships. Opportunities often sound better in two languages and if my Mandarin or translation app lets me down, I’ll make up for it with enthusiasm, a reliable interpreter, and a fast-paced attitude to match.
