At almost every business event, there is an invisible gravitational pull toward the biggest titles in the room. The moment a well-known CEO or senior banker walks in, conversations pivot. Business cards surface at impressive speed. If networking had a heat map, you would see all the attention concentrated in one corner of the ballroom.
That is human nature. As an independent boutique consultant with 30 years of experience in our show business, I have learned to observe this with a quiet smile. I have seen full market cycles – euphoria, panic, reinvention, repeat. I have seen large institutions dominate headlines and then disappear through mergers or missteps. Over time, you realize that visibility is temporary. Character and consistency are not.
I do not usually command the spotlight at these events and I’m perfectly comfortable with that. My very first client is still with me after 25 years. That relationship has survived bull markets, bear markets, drawdowns, recoveries, and countless “this time is different” narratives.
Longevity like that is not built on charisma. It is built on trust, alignment, and the ability to navigate difficult periods without losing discipline. More importantly, he has referred multiple investors to me over time.
I also work selectively. Not every client is the right fit. Not every partnership makes sense. After three decades, I have earned the right to choose who I work with just as much as they choose me.
Independence does not mean isolation. My team work is strengthened by the partners I collaborate with. I am grateful for their support, their expertise, and the trust we place in one another.
Alignment in philosophy, temperament, and long-term expectations matters more than scale. I would rather work with a growing base of thoughtful clients and serious partners who understand my strengths than compete for attention around a crowded circle.
